Field Practice
Field Practice is an integral and essential component of the Diploma and Bachelor programmes delivered by Bodhi. It enables students to apply their learning in real-world early childhood environments, weaving together theory and practice in a way that is deeply aligned with our commitment to holistic and bicultural education. During field practice, students complete structured Key Teaching Tasks that are directly mapped to course learning outcomes, Graduate Profile Outcomes (GPOs), and the Teaching Council's Standards for the Teaching Profession.
This professional experience supports the development of reflective, ethical, and culturally responsive kaiako. Students are mentored in the day-to-day realities of teaching, building strong relationships with tamariki, whānau, and colleagues, and gaining insight into the complexity and reward of working in the ECE sector.
At the heart of this process are the mentors - the fully registered kaiako within ECE centres who walk alongside our learners throughout their field practice journey. Their expertise, professional guidance, and willingness to share authentic teaching experiences provide students with invaluable insights that cannot be gained from coursework alone. At Bodhi, we deeply value the time, energy, and aroha these mentors invest in shaping the next generation of teachers. Their mentorship not only supports student growth but also strengthens the reciprocal relationships between Bodhi and the ECE sector, ensuring our programmes remain grounded in the realities of professional practice.
All of our programmes are delivered through a blended model that combines distance learning (online, synchronous, and asynchronous components) with field-based practicum placements in licensed early childhood settings. This approach ensures that students have regular opportunities to apply theory in authentic ECE environments, while also accessing ongoing academic, pastoral, and cultural support.

Key Teaching Tasks:
Are specific, observable, and high-priority teaching actions that all student teachers must demonstrate across the programmes. All Key Teaching Tasks (KTTs) are aligned to the Teaching Council Teaching Standards, and together, they show how your understanding, behaviour and teaching knowledge come together in real practice.
Every KTT is assessed within the Field Based workbook (Kaiako Kete), using a four-stage progression scale:
- Demonstration - Direct Supervision - Indirect Supervision - Independent
At the end of each course, students must complete the Field-Based Practice Tasks aligned to that course's KTT's. These tasks are not optional - they are essential, and must be completed before the related KTT's can be assessed.

"I would highly recommend Bodhi to anyone who is considering studying Early Childhood Education. With very passionate, respectful and knowledgeable tutors, students are supported and mentored to become comprehensive and well rounded practitioners in the care and education for young children.
I have worked with students who have studied with Bodhi and I can see the foundations of respect and understanding for young children really coming through in their practices. This seems to come naturally for students who study with Bodhi because it is woven through their studies".
